What Type of Visa can you get to Work in Australia?

OK, so it appears from feedback that you want to receive a bit more technical nitty gritty on the technicalities involved in getting an Employer sponsored visa to work in Australia.

Well, it involves a paper chase so get yourself prepared. If the Australian government doesn’t demand it then the various intermediaries involved in moving to Australia will require the documents to prepare the way to carrying out a search for you.

So off we go in search of an Employer Sponsored 457 Visa:

  • A quality CV is the key document to secure any job. Prepare it, hone and polish it and only send it when you are completely satisfied it shows your skills in the best light. Keep it brief a maximum of two pages with personal details first, then career experience starting with your current position and working backwards and the same for education back to the level relevant to you and detailing professional and trade certificates. We always recommend a photo in the top right hand corner.
  • A copy of your passport, which clearly shows your nationality and age. Hopefully this will match the photograph on your CV.
  • Copies of your trade and/or professional certificates, these need to be good quality and if in a foreign language please provide a certified English translation
  • References (but not from your current employer) are a help but we need 2 or 3 at this stage.
  • We also ask applicants to provide a statement all about themselves of <500 words to make their application come alive, to allow employers the chance to see the inner you, whether it is as community helper a sportsman or a hobby you follow in your spare time and your aspirations for the future. This is much more important for working in Australia than it is in securing a job in Europe.

OK so armed with this info where do you go?

You can try and do it yourself through various job boards or local Australian agencies but this rarely seems to work.

  • The job boards are full of non-existent or expired jobs
  • According to a number of our clients the Australian recruiters are so busy they are not interested in investing time in helping people through the visa route
  • Only one in three jobs is ever advertised.

Let’s say you get a job offer then you go into the process of getting your visa application completed (see above) and then you enter the queue to get a visa issued.

Whilst all applications should be treated equally, knowing the processes backwards and having direct links with the Employers and the immigration authorities is a great help and is the oil that keeps the wheels of the immigration process rotating.

So what should you do?

Ask around to see who others recommend.

  • Carry out an internet search and check out a few websites.
  • Investigate Social Media websites like Facebook and LinkedIn and look for Australian oriented sites.
  • Some organisations have gone the extra mile and built in the opportunity for you to establish a personal information centre on their systems enabling you to assemble all the above information in one place so that you can use it should you decide to seek citizenship in Australia in due course. These sites will allow you to add information as you receive it including medical information that will be required in due course.

Making the right choice can make the difference between success and failure so invest the time in getting your information portfolio together as you will need it.
