Nine out of ten firms ‘will not employ graduates’ in 2010

The vast majority of companies have no plans to recruit graduates in 2010, a new survey has revealed.

Research carried out by the Centre for Enterprise showed that 89 per cent of UK companies will not be taking on university leavers in the next 12 months.

According to the report, which polled over 500 small to medium-sized businesses in the East Midlands, most firms will look towards skilled candidates with experience.

The survey also showed that many small and medium-sized companies are unsure of what a graduate qualification even is, and prefer to opt for workers who have proven experience in manual and skilled labour.

In addition, just 11 per cent of companies said they had taken on a graduate in the last 12 months.

Recently, Dan Hawes, co-founder of the Graduate Recruitment Bureau, said that skilled applicants are increasingly edging out graduates when it comes to acquiring key roles.
