Gas Process Operations Engineer West PDVSA. Zulia, Venezuela. June 2008- Present


I am leading the team responsible for the monitoring, efficient and safe operation of the Gas System West PDVSA, which involves connexion between oil and gas production areas (offshore and onshore), low and high pressure gas networks, LNG processing plants, gas utilisation calculations, provide pressure and volume necessary to operate electrical plants, petrochemical plants, refinery and domestic consumption.

Duties Included:

  • Ensure that the gas produced in oil fields meet requirements for gas compression, refinery and petrochemical plants (pressure, volume, composition).
  • Monitor on a daily basis key variables of the Pressure, volume, in gas lift networks and low pressure gas network (Inlet compression plants pressure).
  • Participate in technical studies with use of Pipephase, Pipesym to evaluate Gas Networks in order to increase Oil, Gas production.
  • Participate in technical studies with use of Hysys, Pro II to evaluate process as Compression Gas, LNG and LPG plants in order to increase Oil, Gas and LNG, LPG production.
  • Working in Handling and Measurement of Gas Department in West PDVSA, where is discussed daily, monthly and yearly the mass balance to be present before the Hydrocarbon Venezuelan Ministry, in order to guarantee use of formation gas produced including losses, allocation gas for clients (refineries, petrochemical plants, domestic consumption, oil production facilities) and calculations of gas converted to liquid (LNG, LPG).
  • Knowledge in H2S and CO2 Sour Gas processing and handling (Urdaneta Garcia Field 2900-15000 ppm H2S in gas, Cogollo Field 6000 ppm H2S in gas separated from acid crude oil, Ceuta Field 70000 ppm CO2 in gas).
  • Regulate operational activities in accordance with Safety, Occupational Health, Environmental Conservation and Security regulations and procedures.
  • Control and Safety Valves Sizing.
  • Pigging Operations
  • Flaring and vent operations
  • Provide technical support in FEED studies.
  • Operations Support in new oil and gas field projects.
  • Co-ordinate Start-up, Shutdown and Emergencies activities.
  • Plan and Coordinate Maintenance Activities.
  • Participate in the preparation of departmental budgets.
  • Produce daily report.
  • Support HAZOP`s studies
  • Liaise with Training Department to arrange for external training requirements.
  • Co-ordinate the department’s occupational health programmes, and periodic medical examinations.
  • Carry out monitoring, auditing and reviewing of the Permit to Work System.
  • Assure automated operations for critical processes involving Oil and Gas Production
  • Implement new technologies in order to increase automation level.

This study gave me the opportunity to enlarge my knowledge in Oil and Gas Business emphasizing in Offshore operations. Courses taken included: Facilities, Processing & Pipelines, Materials & Corrosion, Environmental Impact & Risk Management, Business Essential and Engineering Project Management. Final project , which was conducted in Venezuela and it was denominated “Effects in the Oil production of Rosa Mediano Field during operation of GLP Tia Juana 3 Gas Plant”.

I was responsible for the monitoring, efficient and safe operation of the Tia Juana and Maracaibo Gas System West PDVSA, which involves connexion between oil and gas production areas, low and high pressure gas networks, LNG processing plants, gas utilisation calculations.

Process Engineer Tia Juana Lago, West PDVSA. Zulia, Venezuela February 2003- January 2005

I was responsible for the conduction of technical studies and process optimizations in Gas Plants, Main Stations, Flow stations, and Water Injection Plants. Also, the simulations of pipelines, gas networks, existing facilities, multiphase systems, etc., using process simulators like: Pro-II, Pipephase, Pipesim were included among my activities.


Duties Included:
  • Conduct hydraulic analysis.
  • Size and Rate separators and scrubbers.
  • Preparation of Material and Heat Balance.
  • Sized control valves for Gas and liquid services.
  • Select and Size Pressure Relief Valves.
  • Performed designs of process equipments.
  • Preparation of Process Flow Diagram (PFD).
  • Design and Evaluate (steady and transient state) Multiphase gathering systems.
  • Preparation of Piping and Instrumentation diagram (P&ID).
  • Carried out debottlenecking studies.
  • Utilise standards, codes & regulations in order to carry out appropriate design verification activities and deliver a strong technical solution.
  • Provided day to day engineering guidance & support.
  • Develops/assesses the feasibility, soundness, and safety of engineering designs and solutions. Provides conceptual design of process equipment systems.
  • Undertake preliminary evaluations to determine safe ways to enhance processes.
  • Support in Start-up and Shutdown of process equipments ( pumps, oil treaters, oil&gas separation systems, free water knockouts, etc.).
  • Develops feasibility studies and supporting project economics.
  • Contribute to the development and management of operating and capital budgets.
  • Provide / review designs for environmental, permitting and safety compliance.

This study introduced me in Gas Processing industry in Venezuela. Courses taken included: Natural Gas Treatment, Gas Reservoirs, Compression and expansion equipment, Gas liquid extraction processes. Final project was denominated “Gas Network and GLP Processing Evaluation in Tia Juana 2 Gas Plant”.
